Alcaraz Notches 50th Win of 2025 with Cincinnati Open Success

Carlos Alcaraz recorded his 50th match victory of the 2025 tennis season with a straight-sets win over Hamad Medjedovic in the Cincinnati Open third round. The Spaniard triumphed 6-4, 6-4, extending his ATP Masters 1000 winning streak to 13 matches.

The 22-year-old world number two matched a feat last achieved by Novak Djokovic between 2013 and 2016 — reaching 50 wins in four consecutive seasons. He will meet Italy’s Luca Nardi in the fourth round on Wednesday.

“You have to think positive and just play your best tennis possible that day,” said the five-time Grand Slam champion.

Competing Without Full Fitness

Alcaraz admitted that not every match is played in ideal physical condition.
“I’m really happy that in really difficult matches I’m able to play my best tennis even though I’m not feeling the right way,” he added. “I’m just happy and proud about it because it’s something I’m working on.”

How the Match Unfolded

In humid Ohio weather, the first set stayed on serve until Alcaraz broke at 4-3 and held on to take it. Medjedovic, also 22, received treatment for neck pain before the second set. He came close to breaking Alcaraz at 3-3 but missed two drop shots into the net. The Spaniard broke for 4-3 and closed out the match.

A Strong 2025 Campaign

This season, Alcaraz has already lifted seven ATP Masters 1000 trophies, including titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. He defended his French Open crown against world number one Jannik Sinner in June but fell to the Italian in the Wimbledon final in July.

Next on his schedule is the US Open 2025, beginning 24 August, where he will aim for another Grand Slam triumph.

Heat Challenges in Cincinnati

The intense heat in Cincinnati has caused problems for players, with temperatures over 30°C. Francisco Comesana and Reilly Opelka both took medical timeouts during their match. Comesana eventually won 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 7-5, saving three match points, but required medical attention in the second set. Opelka also called for the doctor late in the match due to dizziness and high blood pressure.
