Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, has made it clear that Formula 1 will always be the team’s central focus. Speaking on How Leaders Lead With David Novak, he also shared McLaren’s plans to chase the prestigious triple crown — victories in Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Woking-based team is competing in Formula 1, IndyCar, and Formula E, with entry into the World Endurance Championship set for 2027. McLaren’s F1 campaign in 2025 has been dominant, leading the constructors’ standings by 299 points at the summer break. Drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have been instrumental in securing this commanding lead.

Expanding Footprint Across Global Motorsport

McLaren’s IndyCar team is also enjoying success, with Pato O’Ward currently sitting second in the drivers’ standings. Brown explained that competing in multiple series strengthens McLaren’s reach, especially in the North American market.

“We’re a Formula 1 team, we’re an IndyCar team, currently a Formula E team, and now going to become a World Endurance Championship team, which is Le Mans,” said Brown.

“Obviously, the centre of our universe is Formula 1 and always will be. However, North America is one of, if not the most important market for most companies – huge fan base, great economy.

Before Formula 1’s boom in North America, we wanted an edge over other F1 rivals in fan engagement and corporate partnerships. Even though F1 is now growing there, we still aim to be the biggest in North America. That’s why we are committed to IndyCar.”

Entry into the World Endurance Championship

Brown also highlighted why the team is joining the World Endurance Championship in 2027.

“The World Endurance Championship, which is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we’ve just announced entry into – we’re going to go into it in 2027. That’s where all the automotive sports car manufacturers play. You see our competitors: the Ferraris, the Lamborghinis, the Aston Martins, the Porsches. It’s a natural racing series for us to work closely with our automotive business. That’s why we’re entering.”

Chasing Motorsport’s Triple Crown

McLaren is aiming to achieve the triple crown in the same era, something no team has managed.

“You put those three together, you have what’s called the triple crown, which we’re the only team to have ever won – the Indy 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Monaco Grand Prix. But we did it in different eras, so kind of in different eras of our brand.

We are now the only team in the world racing in those three huge – really the three biggest – racing series. This offers us diversity of opportunity with fans, geographies, technologies, and for our corporate partners.”

With McLaren’s 2025 F1 dominance, the triple crown could be the team’s next historic milestone.
