Stefanos Tsitsipas decided to reunite with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, as his coach. This came after ending his partnership with Goran Ivanisevic. The Greek star, once World No. 3, recently hit his lowest ATP ranking since 2018.
After beating Fabian Marozsan 7-6(3), 6-2 in Cincinnati’s second round, Tsitsipas opened up about the reunion.
“It might not be something smooth that suddenly you see the right outcome out of it, of being back again with my father. That’s not really what the whole point is,” Tsitsipas said. “It is trying to figure out the person who cares the most about me and really is going to spend extra hours on the court, perfecting me, trying to get me as good as possible.”
The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals champion said many things led to their previous split. Miscommunication was one of the main reasons.
“I feel like I didn’t have enough patience anymore as well. I’ve grown since then. He’s grown since then,” Tsitsipas said. “I feel like his perception about certain things has changed towards the better. I’m hoping we can work towards that together, and I’m hoping we can [hear] each other out.”
Focus on Technical Improvements
Tsitsipas shared that his father has pushed him to improve his technique. “There are plenty of things, meaning adjustments. I don’t feel like it’s as big as trying to change a forehand or backhand,” he said. “But there are certain ways, certain habits you build on tour without realizing because you’re focused on your opponent. So a coach helps recalibrate misalignments and mistimings in technique and how you come behind the ball.”
The 12-time ATP Tour winner said his game relies heavily on technical precision. “I’m a technical player, I rely a lot on my technique. I need good technique to hit the ball the way I like it,” Tsitsipas said. “To do that, I need someone with a good eye to spend hours cleaning up my shots. The goal is to make them smooth and effective without overcomplicating things.”
After an early loss in Toronto to Christopher O’Connell, Tsitsipas bounced back in Cincinnati. He now prepares to face Benjamin Bonzi, who upset Lorenzo Musetti.
