Top-ranked players Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka began their title defenses strongly at the Cincinnati Open 2025. Both the men’s and women’s world number ones won their second-round matches comfortably. Sinner overpowered Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan 6-1, 6-1 in less than an hour, while Sabalenka overcame 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 6-1 under the evening lights.
Sabalenka Holds Firm to Defeat Vondrousova in Tough Battle
The opening set saw Sabalenka edge ahead after a crucial service break and a powerful winner. The second set was more contested as she saved five break points and rallied from 0-30 down to close out the match. “It’s always a tough match against her,” Sabalenka remarked about her Czech rival. “She pushed me to the limit. If you lose focus even a little bit it can cost you a set. I had to fight for every point against her.”
Sabalenka is now set to face Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who won 6-3, 6-2 over Olga Danilovic.
Sinner Shows Dominance with Quick Win Over Galan
Sinner started strong, capturing the first five games in just 15 minutes. He recorded 17 winners and committed only four unforced errors. The 59-minute victory marked the fastest of his ATP career, surpassing his previous best by a minute.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Sinner. “I’m pleased because playing here is not easy. The ball flies, and you must serve very accurately to progress. Today I found my spots but there’s still room for improvement. For a first match it couldn’t have gone better.”
After winning the first set, Sinner broke early in the second. Though Galan fought hard in a lengthy game to save five break points, Sinner sealed the win with three aces.
