Toto Wolff has strongly defended Lewis Hamilton’s legacy as “the greatest of all time” (GOAT) after Hamilton’s emotional self-criticism following a difficult Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton, who exited in Q2 and finished 12th, called himself “absolutely useless” and mentioned “a lot going on in the background that is not great.”
Despite Hamilton’s disappointment, Wolff believes the British driver’s status in F1 remains unparalleled.
Wolff: Hamilton’s Emotional Honesty Highlights His Drive
“That is Lewis wearing his heart on his sleeve,” Wolff said, referring to Hamilton’s candid reaction after the race. “It was very raw. He was doubting himself.”
Wolff emphasized that Hamilton has always been emotionally transparent, adding, “He’s been that emotionally transparent since he was a young boy or a young adult. So, he’s going to beat himself up.”
Despite Hamilton’s frustration, Wolff reminded the world of Hamilton’s greatness: “He’s the GOAT and he will always be the GOAT, and nobody is going to take that away.”
Mercedes’ Struggles: A New Era Could Bring Title Opportunities
Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes has faced performance struggles since the introduction of the new regulations in 2022. However, he believes Hamilton’s unfinished business in Formula 1 is far from over.
“With brand new cars and completely different driving characteristics, the upcoming season will be crucial,” Wolff stated. “It’s absolutely on for Lewis, and I hope he stays on for many more years.”
When asked about Hamilton’s eighth title ambitions, Wolff remained optimistic: “If he has a car underneath him that he has confidence in, that does what he wants, then yes.”
However, Wolff also noted the challenge posed by cars that do not align with Hamilton’s driving style, reflecting on Mercedes’ previous struggles. “If he has a car that’s not giving him the feedback that he wants, and that was the Mercedes of the past few years, and that seems to be the Ferrari and even worse, then not. But you ask me whether he has it… he definitely has it.”
In Wolff’s view, Hamilton’s journey is far from over, and there are still many chapters yet to be written in his remarkable F1 career.
