Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, choosing not to compete before the US Open 2025. The Serbian legend has not played a match since Wimbledon 2025.
His decision leaves him without any tune-up matches before heading to Flushing Meadows, where he’s chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title. A tournament spokesperson confirmed the news ahead of this week’s ATP Masters 1000 event.
Djokovic has now skipped Cincinnati for two straight years. He has previously won the tournament three times.
No Matches Since Wimbledon: Djokovic Takes Big Gamble
Djokovic, now 38, last played a non-Slam event at the Geneva Open in May. He won that title before heading to Paris for the French Open.
There, he lost to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. The same result followed at Wimbledon. Sinner once again stopped him in straight sets.
“I would be sad, but hopefully it’s not my last match on the Centre Court,” Djokovic said in his post-match press conference. “I’m not planning to finish my Wimbledon career today. So I’m planning to come back, definitely at least one more time, to play on Centre Court. I’m so fresh off the court, it’s hard to put things in a larger perspective and say what the plan is for the next few months or a year.”
Djokovic last lifted a Grand Slam trophy at the US Open 2023. He also played the Wimbledon 2024 final, where he lost again to Carlos Alcaraz.
Eyes on History: Can Djokovic Stop Sinner and Alcaraz?
Djokovic owns four US Open titles. He won in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2023. Last year, though, he exited in the third round against Alexei Popyrin. That was his earliest exit from the tournament in 18 years.
He now looks to challenge the dominance of Alcaraz and Sinner, who have won the last seven majors between them.
The Serbian was also absent from the Canadian Open last week. His withdrawal, along with Sinner and Alcaraz, disappointed fans and organizers.
Off the court, Djokovic recently joined a group investing in French football club Le Mans, alongside several Formula 1 drivers.
The US Open 2025 begins on Sunday, August 24, and ends on Sunday, September 7. All eyes will be on whether Novak Djokovic can win Grand Slam No. 25 in New York.
